A formidable stone structure. That’s the Beginenturm, a silent witness to Hanover’s evolving story. The Beginenturm stands tall at the Hohen Ufer, a landmark with a past stretching back to 1357. Then, it was known as “De nye Torn” or the new tower. It formed a crucial part of Hanover’s city fortifications.

Originally, the Beginenturm was erected in the garden of the Beguines. The Beguines were a group of religious women. They lived in a community but didn’t take formal vows like nuns. The name Beginenturm, or Beguinenturm, reflects this history.

The Beginenturm was intentionally built within sight of Lauenrode Castle. Lauenrode Castle sat across the Leine River. This strategic placement showed the city’s confidence. It showed its strength in relation to the regional ruler at that time.

Imagine the construction. The Beginenturm’s foundation goes down more than 4.20 meters. The tower has three distinct sections built with stones of varying sizes. Lindener Kalkstein formed this shell tower. It has walls up to 3 meters thick and reaches about 23 meters high. Some material even came from the earlier Romanesque Marktkirche.

Inside, the Beginenturm’s ground floor was vaulted later. The upper floors, facing the old city, were enclosed with timber framing from around 1660 until 1944. The Beginenturm has served many roles.

In the early 16th century, the Beginenturm acted as a prison. In 1526, it held prisoners related to the Reformation. Later, starting in 1642, the former armory was attached to the Beginenturm. This happened during the Thirty Years’ War. The armory’s remains became part of the Historical Museum in 1966.

Picture the 18th century. The Beginenturm became a storage space for peat. Peat was the most important heating material of the time. An interesting change of purpose.

In 1896, there was a competition to transform the Beginenturm into a historicized water tower. This transformation would occur in connection with the construction of the river water art. After World War II, the Beginenturm became an artist’s studio in 1948. From 1972 to 2007, a restaurant called Turm occupied the building.

The Beginenturm underwent renovations from 2011 to 2014. Since June 28, 2014, the Beginenturm has been open to the public as part of the Historical Museum. There were plans for special exhibition rooms. These rooms would detail the tower’s history. There were also plans for glazed experience rooms. These rooms would offer city views, but they were not realized due to cost.

The Beginenturm stands as a testament to Hanover’s rich and varied past. From defensive tower to prison, from storage space to artist’s studio, it has adapted to the changing needs of the city. Its presence reminds us of the layers of history beneath our feet.
