“Did you know Las Águilas was once farmland?” I ask. Picture this. Rolling fields of wheat stretched where now stand apartment blocks. This was the Huerta el Polvorín a vast expanse of farmland belonging to the Blázquez-Serra family. They moved to Madrid from Moratalaz in the early 20th century. Their land became the foundation of Las Águilas.

Las Águilas meaning “The Eagles” is a neighborhood in Madrid’s Latina district. Its history isn’t just about buildings. It’s about transformation. It’s a story of agricultural land becoming a vibrant urban area.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s the Franco regime planned its development. The National Housing Syndicate spearheaded a public-private partnership. The first homes rose in the 1960s welcoming young newlyweds. They could afford new homes. This was a stark contrast to nearby areas facing housing shortages. A crucial element in Las Águilas’ success was the extension of Madrid’s Metro Line 5. It connected the area directly to the city.

By the late 1960s the government wanted to improve the area. The land was bought from its owners. Parks shopping centers and recreation spaces took the place of fields. Las Águilas grew into a thriving community.

Today Las Águilas boasts a population of over 57000. The neighborhood is home to a mix of residential areas green spaces and amenities. The municipal market is a central hub. It’s a meeting place a vibrant marketplace. It showcases the diverse offerings of the area. Las Águilas is much more than just a place. It’s a testament to Madrid’s evolution and growth.
