Ever wondered what a church transformed into a playground feels like? Welcome to the MACHmit! Museum for Kids in Berlin. This isn’t your average museum. It’s housed in the former Eliaskirche a church consecrated in 1910. Imagine a place where learning is an adventure. That’s the MACHmit! Museum.
The MACHmit! Museum opened in 2003. It’s a unique blend of children’s museum and indoor playground. The museum cleverly repurposed the Eliaskirche. This unusual choice was born from necessity. The church needed renovation but lacked funds. The museum needed a home. It found a perfect match in the Eliaskirche. Between 2000 and 2003 the building was renovated for its new purpose.
Today children explore interactive exhibits. They learn through play and experimentation. One area features a historical printer’s workshop and a soap shop. Kids love the mirror cabinet. Their reflections are distorted in funny ways. Behind the mirrors lies a traditional soap shop and the MACHmit! workshop areas. Children can even journey back in time to explore the history of the old Prenzlauer Berg district. In the printing shop they create traditional prints. Little bookworms will adore the International Book Miracle Chamber. It boasts a large donation of children’s books. This donation was part of the European Union National Institutes of Culture Berlin Cluster.
The Paradiesgarten a botanical area lets children discover the plant world. Upstairs worktables provide space for arts and crafts projects. Kids can even take home their creations as souvenirs. Parents can relax in the cafe overlooking the museum. They can easily watch their children play on the impressive seven-meter-high climbing frame. A lift makes it easy for parents to reach their children on the higher levels. Don’t miss the small museum in one of the church’s tower rooms. It showcases unusual objects including the restored church organ. Both children and adults can even try playing the organ during special workshops.
The MACHmit! Museum for Kids isn’t just a museum. It’s a place where history imagination and learning come together. It’s a testament to the creative reuse of space.
