Pentecostal Community Church

Across the street, the Pentecostal House of God stands proudly. It has witnessed Detroit’s history unfold. Let’s delve into the captivating story of the Pentecostal Community Church. In 1959, Pastor Bernard Robert McCrary started services in his home’s basement on Quincy Street. This small congregation of seven included his wife, Gelene, their three daughters, and the church’s first saints, Elder Charlie Wingate Sr. and Martha Wingate. The church, initially named House of Jacob, held its dedicatory service on December 1, 1959. Nine months later, the growing congregation acquired a building on Fairfield Street. It was then that Pastor McCrary renamed the church Pentecostal House of God. The church thrived, fueled by door-to-door witnessing and a growing community. By 1976, they had paid off the land contract and celebrated by burning the mortgage. All church buses were also paid off, and new carpet was installed. Remarkably, these financial triumphs were achieved through cash transactions. God’s blessings continued, and in 1978, the church purchased another building on Hubbell Street. Pastor McCrary led the church until his passing in 1985. Foreseeing God’s plan, he ordained Quintin Wingate, Michael Thomas, and John Rhodes to continue his work. Elder Quintin W. Wingate became the new pastor in October 1985. Pastor Wingate’s dedication and service in nearly every capacity within the church made him uniquely qualified. He was ordained as District Elder in 1988. He helped organize the Midwest Bible College and served on the Executive Board of Bishops. His commitment to teaching God’s word was evident in his sermons and his life. The Pentecostal House of God continued to flourish. In 2004, they celebrated the opening of a new church and Urban Life Center on W. Warren. For over 60 years, the Pentecostal House of God has been a blessing to Detroit. The Urban Life Center continues to partner with the city to promote family development and community rejuvenation through various outreach programs. Bishop Wingate’s love for God and his people strengthens this church of believers. The Pentecostal House of God embodies resilience, growth, and community service, a testament to faith and dedication.
