Van Cortlandt Park boasts an impressive 1146 acres. Over half of it is designated as a Forever Wild Preserve. This initiative by NYC Parks protects ecologically valuable lands. Forests, wetlands, and meadows are shielded from construction and development.

The Old Croton Aqueduct Trail is an easy to moderate 2.3-mile path. It covers the tunnel built in the 1830s and 40s. The aqueduct was an engineering marvel. It extended 42 miles.

The Putnam Greenway is an easy 1.9-mile trail. It occupies the old rail bed of the New York Central Railroad’s Putnam Division.

Van Cortlandt Park’s Northwest Forest covers 188 acres. It grows on rocky heights. This forest has the highest concentrations of rare plants in the city.

The Northeast Forest features wetlands and bottomlands. These areas are ideal for certain trees. They support a plethora of wildlife.

Croton Woods lies between the Northwest and Northeast Forests. The Old Croton Aqueduct Trail traverses this forest.
