Ever wondered where Geneva’s first public lakeside garden resides? That’s Parc Mon-Repos. Given to the city in 1898, it is located at the end of Quai Wilson. The donor was scientist Phillippe Plantamour.

Parc Mon-Repos stands as one of Geneva’s gateways. It marks the start of five exceptionally beautiful parks. These parks offer majestic views. They overlook the lake, the city, and the mountains. The Plantamour family once owned this site in the 19th century. They fittingly named it Villa Mon Repos. The Plantamour brothers transformed it into a cultural hub. It welcomed figures like Andersen and Chateaubriand. Casanova had already frequented the park a century earlier. They also created a garden. It featured rare plants.

Philippe Plantamour bequeathed the Parc Mon-Repos to Geneva in 1898. From 1901 to 1939, the villa housed the Museum of Ethnography. Later, it became the experimental center of Geneva Television. The first television signal was transmitted from here in 1954.

Down the park sits a beautiful 19th-century villa. It is adorned with flowerbeds. Today, it houses the Henry-Dunant Institute. A short distance away, by the water, sits a small stone structure. It is the limnology station. Here, physical and biological phenomena of the lake are studied. The Orangerie nearby hosts nature activities. These are organized by the association La Libellule. The outbuildings along Rue de Lausanne house the offices. These offices belong to the Service des espaces verts SEVE.

Parc Mon-Repos boasts a diverse range of trees. A plane tree, over a century old, dominates the landing stage. This stage is used by the Mouettes. A little higher, a group of exotic palm trees borders the paddling pool. The park also offers spectacular blooms in spring. Magnolias bloom at the corner of Rue de Lausanne and Avenue de France. In late summer, Indian lilacs adorn the top of the playground. Their flowers display pink and mauve tones for weeks.

The city’s green spaces are managed ecologically. No chemical products are used. At Parc Mon-Repos, biodiversity is promoted. This is achieved through wildflower meadows. A native shrub hedge, a breeding site for wood insects, a beehive and numerous nesting boxes are used.

Mon Repos Park is a great place for lounging around during good weather. There are no refreshment stands or shops within the park. If you plan to stay a long time you might want to stock up beforehand.

Parc Mon-Repos is more than just a park. It is a testament to Geneva’s history. It is a haven of natural beauty. It provides a tranquil escape for all who visit.
