Ever wonder what a “Bockerl” is? Here in Regensburg, at the Protzenweiher bus terminal in Stadtamhof, stands a testament to a bygone era: the Dampflokomotive der Walhallabahn, affectionately known as the Walhalla-Bockerl. “Bockerl” is a Bavarian term of endearment for a small locomotive, and this one has a story to tell. This steam locomotive, built in 1908, is a relic of the narrow-gauge Walhallabahn railway. It once puffed its way from Stadtamhof to Wörth an der Donau, a route steeped in history and local significance. The railway, opened in 1889, owed its name and existence to the Walhalla, a majestic hall of fame built by King Ludwig I. The Walhalla, perched on a hill overlooking the Danube, honored figures of “German culture”. Before the railway, access to this iconic landmark was limited, hindering its popularity. The Walhalla-Bahn changed all that, connecting people to this cultural treasure. Imagine the excitement as this locomotive, number 99 253, chugged along the tracks. It carried passengers eager to visit the Walhalla and transported goods vital to the region’s economy. The route wound through the heart of Regensburg, passing through Steinweg, Reinhausen, Weichs, and Schwabelweis, becoming a lifeline for these communities. The line extended to Wörth an der Donau in 1903, expanding its reach and importance for freight transport. A large transshipment facility, including two gantry cranes for transferring timber onto standard-gauge wagons, was constructed where the line intersected with the main railway line to Schwandorf. The Walhalla-Bockerl’s journey wasn’t always smooth. Navigating the narrow streets of Stadtamhof, Steinweg, and Reinhausen proved challenging. The locomotive’s smoke became a nuisance, and accidents with horse-drawn carriages occurred. Following a lengthy legal battle, the railway’s first kilometer was abandoned in 1933, with a new terminus established in Reinhausen. Eventually, the rise of bus lines and economic pressures led to the decline of the Walhallabahn. Passenger services ceased in 1960, and the final freight train ran in 1968. Now, this silent giant stands as a Denkmal, a memorial to a time when the Walhalla-Bockerl connected communities and brought people closer to a cultural icon. Its presence here serves as a tangible reminder of Regensburg’s rich transport history.
