It comes from the Latin “arcoze” or “arcu celus,” both meaning “small arch.” It’s believed to be a reference to a small archway that once stood here, perhaps over a babbling stream, in the first century. Now, fast forward through the centuries to 1113, We find a mention of a settlement named “Arcuzello,” even before Portugal became a nation. Over time, Arcozelo grew. Manuel I of Portugal even granted it a foral, a charter of rights, in 1518. This speaks volumes about Arcozelo’s growing importance. But Arcozelo is more than just dates and names.
