Deep in the heart of Audubon Zoo, nestled among lush greenery, lies a hidden gem. The Odenheimer Aquarium. This isn’t the modern aquarium you might find downtown. The Odenheimer Aquarium boasts a unique history, intertwining with the very fabric of New Orleans. Sigmund Odenheimer, a German immigrant, arrived in New Orleans in 1880 and quickly made his mark. He led Lane Cotton Mills and the Deutsches Haus. His philanthropy extended to the Audubon Zoo, where his generosity birthed the Odenheimer Aquarium in 1924. Initially, fifteen fish tanks and a central rotunda housed Audubon’s first sea lions. The sea lions, the stars of the show, quickly outgrew their home. Just four years later, thanks to another Odenheimer donation, a grand sea lion pool emerged. Designed by Sam Stone, the Greek Revival style pool, adorned with columns and ironwork, was hailed as “one of the most perfect pieces of architecture in the park.” The Odenheimer Aquarium wasn’t just about sea lions. It also housed an array of fish and other aquatic life, showcasing the wonders of the underwater world. The Odenheimer Complex has expanded over time, encompassing the Reptile Encounter and Wings of the World. The original rotunda is set for renovations, ensuring its legacy for generations to come. Despite hurricanes and renovations, the Odenheimer Aquarium remains a beloved part of Audubon Zoo, a testament to the vision of Sigmund Odenheimer and the enduring spirit of New Orleans.
