A symphony of scents, a riot of color. That’s the Rosengarten in Charlottenhof. This isn’t just any garden. It’s a living tapestry woven with the threads of royal history and horticultural passion. The Rosengarten sits within the sprawling 290-hectare Sanssouci Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This park, a masterpiece of landscaping, reflects the vision of two Prussian kings: Frederick the Great and Frederick William IV. Our Rosengarten, however, specifically blossomed under the watchful eye of Peter Joseph Lenné, the renowned landscape architect. He designed this garden in 1835 for Crown Prince Frederick William IV, adhering to strict geometric principles. The garden is laid out with the Charlottenhof Palace terrace as its central axis. The roses, delicate bush and standard varieties, are arranged in concentric circles at the heart of the garden. A neatly trimmed boxwood hedge encloses the north and south sides. Free-flowing lilac hedges create a natural border towards the park, framing the roses beautifully during their peak bloom. The design was so admired that King Maximilian II of Bavaria, Frederick William IV’s brother-in-law, had an exact replica built on Wörth Island in Lake Starnberg. Originally, the Rosengarten fell victim to the ravages of time and pests. It was revived in 1995. Today, it showcases more than 1000 historical roses of approximately 400 varieties, all cultivated before 1885, the year the original garden was transformed. The gardeners responsible for this vibrant display act as horticultural detectives. They meticulously source and cultivate varieties specific to the garden’s historical period. They even contend with the challenge of finding standard roses with 1.10-meter stems, the historical standard, as opposed to the modern 90-cm stems. They protect the delicate roots from voles with wire baskets and, lacking historical records, exercise their own judgment in choosing companion plants for the undergrowth. In recent years, blue-flowering lavender has provided a striking contrast to the roses’ vibrant hues. The Rosengarten in Charlottenhof stands as a testament to the enduring allure of these beautiful, yet demanding flowers, a fragrant echo of Prussian royalty and romantic ideals.
