Established in 1989 Seoul Science High School stands before you. This isn’t just any high school. It’s a rigorous academy for gifted students. It’s one of eight such academies in all of South Korea. Think of it as a proving ground for the nation’s brightest young minds.
The school’s reputation precedes it. Its selection process is legendary. Only the most gifted middle school graduates nationwide are accepted. Before 2009 approximately 180 students were in each grade. A unique early graduation program existed. About a third of second-year students graduated a year early.
After transitioning to an Academy for Gifted Students the number of students admitted each year dropped to roughly 125. The curriculum changed to better meet student needs and curiosity. The new system includes a non-graded credit-based graduation system. It emphasizes research activities to develop creativity. It also features an interdisciplinary curriculum.

Seoul Science High School focuses on advanced courses tailored to individual aptitudes. It offers varied programs for well-rounded education. Students aren’t obligated to complete general high school curricula. The admissions process is highly selective.
Students study required courses in their first year. They get to choose advanced courses in their second and third years. To graduate they need 170 credits. This includes 140 academic credits and 30 research credits. They also need 240 hours of special activities. This includes 120 hours of group activity and 120 hours of volunteer work. University-level courses taken here get Advanced Placement credit at top Korean universities.
The school boasts impressive achievements. Many students participate in national and international Science Olympiads. They win medals regularly. A significant portion of Korean participants in the International Science Olympiads come from Seoul Science High School.
Graduates often attend prestigious universities. These include Seoul National University KAIST and POSTECH. Many go to top universities abroad. After earning their bachelor’s degrees many alumni pursue graduate studies at top institutions. The school motto is Intelligence and Righteous Action.
