Imagine a hidden world teeming with life. That’s Volksdorfer Teichwiesen. It is a nature reserve in Hamburg. This place wasn’t always a haven for wildlife. Its story stretches back to the Ice Age.

These meadows are one of Hamburg’s last tunnel valleys. They formed during the Weichsel Ice Age. Melting waters flowed under the ice and carved this unique landscape. The Volksdorfer Tunneltal is remarkably short. This makes it a geological oddity.

Once, a deep valley existed here. It has filled with over 14 meters of soil. This led to the formation of lowland moors and alder forests. Until 1882, a large pond graced this area. Its water powered mills. After draining it, people used the land for pastures. In 1911, the present-day ponds were created for better drainage.

Today, Volksdorfer Teichwiesen spans about 30 hectares. It lies between Waldweg, Saseler Weg, and the Volksdorf weekly market. Two streams meander through this wetland, feeding two ponds.

The Volksdorfer Teichwiesen’ plant life is incredibly diverse. It has a high number of rare species for Hamburg. Varied habitats of wetlands and forest edges foster a rich animal world.

Here, flowing and stagnant waters meet reed beds. Deciduous forests blend with meadows and pastures. These create prime conditions for wetland species. Native orchids bloom here. Look for the broad-leaved and spotted orchid. Also, keep an eye out for devil’s bit and yellow meadow-rue.

The animal life thrives here. The Volksdorfer Teichwiesen are full of insects, amphibians, and rare birds. Dragonflies like the great dragonfly and damselfly flit about. Moor frogs and grass frogs hop through the undergrowth. Breeding birds include lapwings, snipes, reed warblers, and great crested grebes. The kingfisher often visits. It doesn’t nest here, but it’s a frequent guest.

To protect the area, a pretreatment plant was built in 1995. It cleans surface runoff from Volksdorf’s town center. This plant is a combination of settling basin and planted soil filter. It’s a pilot project for Hamburg.

The Volksdorfer Teichwiesen is more than just a pretty place. It is a reminder of Hamburg’s geological past. It is also a refuge for rare plants and animals. Scottish Highland cattle graze here. They help maintain the landscape. They act as natural “landscape gardeners.”

You can easily reach the Volksdorfer Teichwiesen. Take the U1 to Volksdorf. The nature reserve lies to the west. The Waldweg borders it to the north. The Saseler Weg and An den Teichweisen define its southern edge.

Take a walk along the paths. You will see the beauty of the meadows. Keep an eye out for blooming orchids in June. Listen to the grasshoppers chirp in summer. Watch gray herons and storks hunt for food. The Volksdorfer Teichwiesen is a treasure. It is a place where nature’s wonders never cease.
