Behold the Yildiz Camii. It stands as a testament to a sultan’s devotion and a blend of architectural styles. Built in 1886, the Yildiz Camii is also known as the Yildiz Hamidiye Mosque. It emerged nine years after Abdülhamid II moved into Yildiz Palace.

Sarkis Balyan and Dikran crafted this unique mosque. They blended Neo-Gothic and Ottoman styles into a rectangular plan. This fusion created a distinctive appearance. The Yildiz Camii stands apart from other mosques.

Abdülhamid II held the Yildiz Camii in high regard. He spent much of his time within the palace walls. However, the Yildiz Camii was an exception. The sultan visited the mosque every Friday for prayers. Each visit transformed into a state ceremony. Even though the mosque was near the palace, Abdülhamid II always used his horse carriage. Citizens and foreigners gathered to witness the spectacle. This grand display led to the construction of the Set Pavilion. It allowed official visitors to view the ceremonies in comfort.

The Yildiz Camii covers a large area. The base spans 1,500 square meters. The land around it extends to 10,000 square meters and is enclosed by a fence. Three entrances welcome visitors. The main entrance faces north. It opens onto the road in front of the palace.

A single minaret graces the Yildiz Camii. It features one balcony on the right side. Unlike traditional mosques, the Yildiz Camii lacks a courtyard.

Inside, a small dome sits atop the structure. Sixteen windows encircle its base. Four columns support the dome. They are made of steel covered in wood. This deviates from imperial mosque traditions that favored granite columns.

Thirty-six windows allow daylight to stream into the Yildiz Camii. A large Bohemian crystal chandelier hangs from the dome’s center. Prince of Bismarck gifted this impressive piece.

The Hünkar Mahfili is on the left side of the Yildiz Camii. This imperial lodge was reserved for the sultan. The lodge for the sons of sultans is on the right. The imperial lodge boasts richer decoration. Abdülhamid II always prayed in his private Hünkar Mahfili on Fridays and religious holidays.

The Hamidiye Clock Tower stands on the southwest corner of the Yildiz Camii. The Hamidiye Fountain is in the same garden. It bears Abdülhamid II’s signature.

The Yildiz Camii is the last imperial mosque of the Ottoman Empire. Sultans personally funded these mosques. Abdülhamid II was the last sultan to commission one. His successors did not follow suit. The Yildiz Camii remains a symbol of his reign and architectural innovation.
