“Built between 1664 and 1670” That’s the Trinity Cathedral at the Makariev Zheltovodsky Monastery. A monumental structure it is. Four pillars support its five domes. A gallery surrounds it. This magnificent building stands as a testament to faith and resilience.

The Makariev Zheltovodsky Monastery a place of profound historical and spiritual significance has a captivating story. Founded in 1439 by the monk Makary its history is woven into the fabric of Russian Orthodox Christianity. Makary had previously established other monasteries. He was even captured by Tatars. After his release he embarked on a journey seeking a new location. He chose this site by the Unzha River. His final monastery dedicated to the Holy Trinity became his legacy. He died there in 1444. He was later canonized as St Macarius of the Unzha and the Yellow Waters.

The monastery’s story reflects the tumultuous history of Russia. Following the Revolution in 1919 the monastery was closed. Its churches ceased functioning. The relics of St Macarius were moved to a museum. The grounds served as a warehouse. Yet even amidst suppression restoration began in 1970. The damaged wall was rebuilt.

After the fall of the Soviet Union a remarkable rebirth occurred. In 1993 the monastery reopened this time as a convent. St Macarius’s relics returned in 1995. In 2016 it once again became a monastery.

Today the Makariev Zheltovodsky Monastery continues its vital role in the spiritual life of the region. Not all its buildings are fully restored. Restoration is ongoing. The monastery still retains its ancient feel a powerful reminder of centuries of faith and perseverance. The Trinity Cathedral the main cathedral is a masterpiece of 17th-century architecture. Its five-domed structure is truly awe-inspiring. The St Macarius of the Unzha and Yellow Waters Church holds the founder’s relics. It is the monastery’s main functioning church. Smaller churches such as the Annunciation Church and the Dormition Church complete this historic complex.

The Makariev Zheltovodsky Monastery stands as a symbol of hope and resilience. It’s a living testament to faith. It’s a place where history whispers secrets and the spirit of St Macarius still endures.
