Here at the Alhaji Addo Mosque its minaret is very visible. It towers above Accra. This mosque is also known as the Ghana National Mosque. It is the second largest mosque in West Africa.
President Akufo-Addo commissioned the National Mosque of Ghana Complex. The commissioning ceremony took place in Nima. It was a brief ceremony.
The Alhaji Addo Mosque can host over 3000 Muslims. This is inclusive of the courtyard. This is a significant achievement. It honors those who envisioned and sponsored the mosque.
His Eminence Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu regularly leads the Jumua prayer. He is the National Chief Imam and Mufti of Ghana.
The Alhaji Addo Mosque isn’t just for prayers. It is a community center. It welcomes all Ghanaians. The Center preserves Islamic identity. It supports a viable Muslim community. The Center promotes a comprehensive Islamic way of life. This way of life is based on the Holy Quran and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad.
The mosque’s construction began in 2012. Jerry John Rawlings helped secure the land. He wanted to realize the project for Muslims in Ghana. In 1995 Rawlings gave out the land. This replaced a mosque he destroyed. He destroyed it for the building of Rawlings Park in Accra. The Muslim Community in Ghana started the project. They abandoned it for nearly 10 years. This was due to lack of funds.
The Alhaji Addo Mosque is built in an Ottoman revival style. It features four signature minarets. These minarets tower about 65m above the ground. It is claimed to be a replica of the Blue Mosque in Istanbul. The exterior fittings are made of carrara marble. The upper levels of the interior are dominated by blue paints. The stained glass windows have unique designs. Hand-drawn calligraphic verses of the Quran adorn the inner decorations. Carpets cover the floors. The mihrab is made from sculptured marbles. It features a stalactite niche. A double inscriptive panel sits above it. The exterior features cascade domes around the main dome.
The Alhaji Addo Mosque is located at Kanda in Accra. Nana Akufo-Addo commissioned the mosque on Friday 16th July 2021. Presidents Mohammed Bazoum and Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger attended. Mahamudu Bawumia and Fuat Oktay were also in attendance.
The Alhaji Addo Mosque is a 15000-seater capacity complex. It is built on 42 acres of land. It has an office complex for the National Chief Imam and project managers. There is also a morgue and a library. The complex includes a school and dormitories. Workers and guests residences are available. A fitted clinic with laboratories and a pharmacy are on site.
President Akufo-Addo expects the Tourism Minister to make the Alhaji Addo Mosque a place of pilgrimage. He also expects it to be a tourist destination for travelers.
