Ever noticed how Brussels has a cheeky sense of humor? That’s perfectly embodied by Jeanneke Pis.
Right here in this narrow alley stands Jeanneke Pis. She is a modern fountain sculpture in central Brussels. You will find her north of the Grand Place. She is on the eastern side of the Impasse de la Fidélité. That is a narrow cul-de-sac.
This 50-centimetre bronze statue shows a naked little girl. She has short pigtails. She squats and urinates on a blue-grey limestone base.
Denis-Adrien Debouvrie commissioned Jeanneke Pis in 1985. It was erected in 1987. It is meant as a counterpoint to the city’s famous Manneken Pis. Debouvrie owned many restaurants in the Impasse de la Fidélité. He wanted to restore interest in the alley. He also saw it as restoring equality between men and women.
The idea came to him over breakfast one day. He sketched it on the tablecloth. Upon completing it, Debouvrie said, “Now we have gender equality.” The girl’s appearance is said to be inspired by Debouvrie’s younger sister Jenny as a child.
Many inauguration ceremonies were held in June 1987. The mayor of Brussels and The Order of the Friends of Manneken Pis attended one. Italian politician Ilona Staller also attended another. She was meant to symbolize the statue’s naturalism.
Jeanneke Pis is behind iron bars. This protects her from vandals. People were touching the area around the statue too much. This was ruining it. It also prevents theft.
Passers-by began tossing coins into the statue’s basin. The non-profit Horizon-Espoir ASBL was formed in 1987. It collects the coins. It donates them to organizations that research AIDS treatment. The money has also been donated to the National Fund for Scientific Research and UNICEF.
A legend says lovers who toss a coin will have fidelity in their love life. A plaque next to the statue used to say this. In December 2021, the plaque was replaced. It is now written from the statue’s perspective. It says if you love someone, throw in a coin. It says she will protect you.
By 2003, Jeanneke Pis had brought so much attention to the Impasse de la Fidélité. This led to the creation of the Delirium Café. It is known for its extensive beer menu. Several other establishments have also been set up in the alley.
So, remember Jeanneke Pis. She is a symbol of Brussels’ playful spirit and a reminder of the city’s commitment to both art and social causes. Take a moment to appreciate her cheeky charm. Maybe even toss in a coin for good luck in love.
