“Ring True” That’s the motto of Wolfson College. A fitting declaration for a place that boldly broke with tradition. Here we stand before this remarkable institution a testament to vision and generosity.

Wolfson College is unique. It’s a Cambridge college but not quite like the others. Founded in 1965 as University College it was initially intended to accommodate the growing number of postgraduate researchers. Its early years were unconventional. It was the first Cambridge college to admit both men and women as students and fellows.

The college’s transformation is a compelling narrative. Initially housed in Bredon House a property donated by a former zoology professor its early existence was precarious. The founding deed stipulated an endowment within ten years or the college faced closure. Enter the Wolfson Foundation. Their substantial benefaction not only secured the college’s future but also led to its renaming in 1973. The resulting architectural masterpiece designed by Michael Mennim features buildings arranged around two main courts a design subtly echoing older Cambridge colleges.

Intriguingly the entrance hall floor boasts a unique feature thin granite slices salvaged from the old London Bridge. A piece of London’s history now residing in the heart of Cambridge. The Wolfson Foundation’s impact extends beyond its financial contribution. It shaped the college’s ethos of egalitarianism. Unlike older colleges Wolfson eschewed the traditional “High Table” separating fellows and students. This inclusive approach continues to shape the atmosphere.

Wolfson’s story isn’t confined to its past. The Lee Library a stunning addition opened in 1994 stands as a symbol of ongoing philanthropy. Donated by Lee Seng Tee its design reflects this generosity. Its foyer houses a scale model of the armillary sphere from the Peking Observatory a detail that adds unexpected intrigue. The library with over 60 quiet study spaces is open 24/7 a boon for dedicated students.

The college gardens too are worth exploring. Many mature trees and shrubs remain from the gardens that once belonged to houses in Selwyn Gardens. These represent a link to the land’s history. The college’s head gardener occasionally leads tours. The gardens open to the public during summer. Wolfson’s commitment to inclusivity extends to its vibrant student life. It hosts a range of events attracting students and visitors. Formal dinners concerts and comedy nights contribute to a lively atmosphere. The Wolfson Howler a popular comedy night features both students and internationally recognised comedians.

Wolfson College. More than just a college. It is a dynamic community a place where tradition meets innovation where history and the present converge in a unique and unforgettable way.
