Simeon Leland’s dream began in 1848. He, a prominent New York City hotelier, envisioned a tranquil escape from the bustling city. He purchased 40 acres in New Rochelle overlooking the harbor. This land would become Residence Park. Leland’s vision took shape between 1856 and 1859 with the construction of his grand, 60-room Gothic castle, “Castle View.” Residence Park wasn’t just a home; it was a statement. It reflected Leland’s success and his appreciation for European elegance. He lived there until his death in 1872. A new chapter began in 1884 when real estate developer Adrian Iselin Jr. acquired the property. Iselin transformed Leland’s estate into one of the first planned “garden communities” in the United States, officially naming it Residence Park. He laid out winding streets like Castle Place, installed gas lines, and enhanced the natural beauty. The original 40 acres were subdivided, leaving 21.5 surrounding the castle. Iselin’s vision for Residence Park was to create a harmonious blend of nature and architecture. He prioritized public spaces, landscaped islands, and winding roads. This careful planning makes it easy to get lost in Residence Park, a charming quirk residents still mention today. The community thrived under strict covenants that dictated property costs, building styles, and setbacks. This ensured a cohesive aesthetic that has survived to this day. Residence Park showcases architectural styles like Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, and Tudor, reflecting the trends of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Within Residence Park, you’ll find the historic home of American patriot Lewis Pintard. The First Presbyterian Church of New Rochelle, also known as Pintard Church, now incorporates Pintard’s house as its priory. Even baseball fans will find a connection here. The legendary Lou Gehrig once called Residence Park home, living on Meadow Lane. The College of New Rochelle occupies what remains of Leland’s original estate. Residence Park stands as a testament to Iselin’s vision. It’s a unique neighborhood where history and nature intertwine, offering a peaceful retreat just a short distance from the city’s clamor.
