Once called Mount Enterprises Glenmount is a small residential neighborhood. It sits within Montreal’s borough of Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce. Let’s take a walk and discover its story.

Glenmount is bordered by the Town of Mount Royal to the north, east, and west. Côte-des-Neiges marks the southern border along Jean-Talon Boulevard and the Canadian Pacific railway tracks. About 1300 people call this 75-acre neighborhood home.

Originally Glenmount was part of the Town of Mount Royal. It was founded in 1912. Later the area split and merged into Montreal. In 1946 it was named Mount Enterprises. But in 1951 the neighborhood was renamed Glenmount. The name honors Baron Strathcona of Glencoe and Mount Royal.

In 1985 an interesting event occurred. 1600 Glenmount homeowners wanted to join TMR. The Quebec government rejected their effort. They felt the city of Montreal would not be adequately compensated.

From 2002 to 2005 Glenmount was briefly part of the former borough of Mount Royal. When the rest of the borough demerged Glenmount joined Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce.

The Glenmount Community Association says that 98% of residents prefer being part of the Town of Mount Royal. They feel physically isolated from the rest of their Montreal borough. Jean-Talon Boulevard and the CP Rail tracks create a border. Residents believe their inclusion in Montreal was an error. They participate more in community life with their Town of Mount Royal neighbors.

One notable point of interest in Glenmount is the Canora commuter rail station. It is part of the Réseau de transport métropolitain. This station connects Glenmount residents to the wider Montreal area.
