“A beacon of faith amidst the trials of Leningrad” The Church of St John the Baptist stands before you. Its walls whisper tales of resilience and devotion. This is not just a church. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of the people of Pushkin.

Originally built between 1823 and 1825 by Leone and Domenico Adamini it wasn’t the first Catholic church in Tsarskoye Selo. An earlier church existed on the property of Commander Mezonyaev. Emperor Alexander I however deemed it insufficient. He donated land for a grander structure. This new church was built in the neoclassical style. The foundation stone was blessed in 1825 on the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist. The church’s consecration took place in 1826 by the Bishop of Minsk Matvey Lipsky.

Sadly the church faced severe hardships. In April 1938 it was closed and turned into a gym. The crypt’s occupants were moved to the Our Lady of Kazan cemetery. The German occupation during the siege of Leningrad caused further damage. Yet even through these dark times hope remained.

The first Catholic ceremony following the closure was held in March 1991. Only seven parishioners attended this Mass. It was a humble beginning a symbol of the faith’s slow but determined return. On 1 October 1997 the church was officially returned to the Catholic parish. An agreement with the Tsarskoye Selo State Museum of Fine Arts enabled joint use of the building.

Today two Spanish priests serve this church. They continue the legacy of faith and resilience. They maintain this beautiful building a powerful reminder of the enduring human spirit. The Church of St John the Baptist stands as a symbol of hope and perseverance. It endures as a vital part of the cultural fabric of St Petersburg.
