“Repensar lo que es el teatro” is Spanish for “rethinking what theatre is”. That’s the driving force behind ExLímite. This unique space in Madrid’s Usera district fosters independent artistic creation.
ExLímite wasn’t always called ExLímite. Previously, this industrial warehouse housed the Kubrik Fabrik theatre hall. Now, it’s a hub for theatrical training research and collaboration. It achieves this through diverse cycles and workshops. Of course, it also offers exciting theatre performances.
The seeds of ExLímite were sown long before its official opening. The company ExLímite officially began in 2017. However the project had been brewing for years. It truly took form in 2015 with its first show. November 2017 was the pivotal moment. The project found a permanent home.
ExLímite serves as a meeting point. Companies artists and projects converge on its stage. The focus is on creation research and training. They explore different performing art methodologies. They push beyond traditional productions.
Gerard Imbert directs this innovative space. He is a Professor of Audiovisual Communication. He also served as the former Director of the French Institute in Madrid. Juan Ceacero co-directs ExLímite. He is an actor. He also directs the ExLímite theatre company.
ExLímite emerged from a collective need. Artists from diverse disciplines sought to redefine theatre. They envisioned a collaborative project. It would be committed to culture. It would take risks. It would break with convention. It would embrace a contemporary vision.

The company’s first show was ILIRIA. It was a co-creation inspired by Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. Denise Despeyroux wrote it. The original text underwent investigation and deconstruction. It blended with a contemporary perspective. This included social media society and Zygmunt Bauman’s concept of liquid love. The performers’ imaginations added to it all. This fusion created a hybrid show. It mixed classic and contemporary elements. It combined performance art and dramatic theatre. Music movement and words found a daring yet delightful balance. ILIRIA received special recognition at the Almagro Off Festival in 2016. It was also a candidate for the Max Award for Best New Show in 2017.
