Have you ever heard of a place where pharaohs and their chosen officials sought rest for eternity? This is al-Asasif. This ancient necropolis is located on the west bank of the Nile River in Luxor, Egypt. It’s a sprawling ancient cemetery that served as the final resting place for nobles and high officials during the Late Period of ancient Egypt. The tombs here are impressive. Many feature elaborate decorations and paintings that depict scenes from the lives of the deceased, their beliefs and their hopes for the afterlife. The most common theme is the pilgrimage to the temple of Abydos, where the god Osiris reigned. You can still see these vivid scenes of the everyday life of the people, including the Egyptians in agriculture and hunting, fishing and family celebrations. In al-Asasif, you will be taken back in time, where you can see a glimpse into the lives of the ancient Egyptians.
