A wave of tranquility washes over you as you stand before the Lds Church in Johannesburg. This isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to faith perseverance and the transformative power of revelation.

The Lds Church in Johannesburg holds a significant place in the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in South Africa. Its story is one interwoven with the country’s complex past. Early missionary efforts began in 1853. Jesse Haven Leonard I Smith and William H Walker arrived in Cape Town. They faced significant challenges including mob violence and opposition to their teachings. Many early converts emigrated to Utah. The mission closed in 1865 only to reopen in 1903.

The early 20th century saw slow but steady growth. The first LDS meetinghouse was built in Mowbray in 1916. Another significant building the “Old Ramah” chapel was constructed on Commissioner Street in Johannesburg in 1925. Government restrictions on missionaries hampered growth. A genealogy program was established to determine eligibility for the priesthood. This policy however was rooted in racial prejudice. Black South Africans were initially prohibited from holding the priesthood.

In 1954 Church president David O McKay visited South Africa. He eased restrictions on priesthood ordination for black members. However local opposition persisted. The 1978 revelation on the priesthood removed the official prohibition. The South African government then lifted restrictions on missionaries. This paved the way for significant growth in black membership. By 2005 black members exceeded fifty percent of the total membership.

The translation of the Book of Mormon into Afrikaans Zulu and Xhosa further facilitated growth. The Afrikaans translation was completed in 1972. The Zulu translation followed in 1987 and Xhosa in 2000. The construction of temples further solidified the Church’s presence in the country. The Johannesburg South Africa Temple was dedicated in 1985. This was the first temple on the African continent. It served as a beacon of hope and a symbol of unity.
