The Institution libre du Sacré-Coeur began as the Collège de Tourcoing. Founded by Recollet Fathers it received royal permission from Philip IV of Spain. He was the Lord of Tourcoing at that time. It was initially a free grammar school. A testament to the importance of education.

The French Revolution brought temporary closure from 1790 to 1802. Napoleon Bonaparte however allowed the Recollet Fathers to return. Headmaster-priest Albert Lecomte oversaw the construction of new buildings. They were in the Gothic revival style in 1853 and 1885. The school moved to its current location at 111 Rue de Lille in December 1853. The original buildings remain a part of the campus today.

Disagreements over teacher appointments led to a significant shift. The school became independent in 1882. It was then renamed the Free Institution of the Sacred Heart. The Institution libre du Sacré-Coeur continued to thrive even after the religious staff departed in 1982.

World War I saw Headmaster Achille Leleu arrested by German soldiers. He bravely protected his students from requisitions. A truly courageous act of defiance.
