“Is it a dragon? Or a serpent?” a child’s voice broke through the quiet contemplation. We stand before the Jiuduihe Town Xishuijian Village North Section of the Great Wall, often called HuangHuaCheng Water Great Wall. It’s a truly remarkable sight. The Great Wall here isn’t just a towering stone sentinel. It dances with the water of the XiShuijian Reservoir. Sections of the wall dip into the lake itself, a unique spectacle in Beijing. HuangHuaCheng Water Great Wall is often known just as HuangHuaCheng. It means “Yellow Flower City”. This name blossoms from the wildflowers that paint the surrounding hillsides in vibrant hues during summer. Originally built during the Ming Dynasty in 1404, the wall stood on solid ground. Its purpose was to protect the capital and the Ming Tombs. It served as a vital defense line, guarding Beijing’s northern gate. Its construction was a feat of engineering. The builders used rice soup to fortify the mortar, making the walls exceptionally strong. This earned it the nickname “Golden Soup Great Wall”. The accidental flooding, a consequence of the XiShuijian Reservoir’s construction, created the “Water Great Wall” phenomenon we see today. Three sections of the wall now play hide-and-seek with the lake. The juxtaposition of the stern, ancient wall with the playful water is simply magical. The wall, with its enemy platforms and strategic gatehouses, isn’t just a static relic. It has become a dynamic, living landscape. This blend of natural beauty and human ingenuity has created a scene unlike any other, a must-see wonder in the heart of China.
