Ten-year-old Susan Northfield’s life changed forever. That day in 1964 she became the first person to borrow a book from Barnwell Road Library. The library itself wasn’t new. It had a history. For years it existed in a shop. Nine years earlier its opening was announced. A credit squeeze delayed its proper establishment. Alderman H R Mallett finally opened Barnwell Library. This wasn’t just any library. It was a community hub. A place where books were borrowed. It offered free PC access and Wi-Fi. It hosted events like ‘Read A Little Aloud’. It even offered online learning resources. Barnwell Library was a vital part of Barnwell Road. Its services extended beyond books. It was a center for learning and community engagement. The library still participates in community events. In 2021-2022 it took part in the Cambridge Window Wanderland displays. So remember Susan’s visit. It marked the beginning of a long and rich history for Barnwell Library. A history of community and learning. A place where books and people connected. Today Barnwell Library continues to serve the community. It remains a vital resource. It’s a testament to the power of community and the love of reading. It’s more than just a place to borrow books. It’s a place where stories begin.
