SunTrek 2000 or the Sunway Monorail was Malaysia’s first public monorail. It opened in 2000. It beat Kuala Lumpur’s monorail to the finish line by three years. The system was a single loop. It circled Sunway City in Subang Jaya. Three stations served the area.

The monorail was a marvel of engineering. Two five-car trains zipped around the 3 kilometer track. These trains were made by Severn-Lamb a British company. The whole project cost an estimated US$10 million. The trains connected key locations. Sunway Pyramid mall was a major stop. So was Sunway College now Sunway University. A branch line even extended to the depot.

But SunTrek 2000’s story is not just about its creation. It’s about its unexpected transformation. The monorail didn’t last long. It closed in 2007. Ambitious plans for expansion never materialized. Today parts of the old track remain. They are now part of a walkway. The system is integrated into the BRT Sunway Line. This bus rapid transit connects Setia Jaya station to USJ7 station.
