Let’s step back in time. The year is 1913. Immigrant believers gathered. They dreamed of a spiritual home. They formed the Swedish Evangelical Free Church. This church later became the First Evangelical Free Church of Los Angeles.
These early members poured their hearts and skills into building this sanctuary. The current building was dedicated in 1925. Look closely at the cornerstone. It declares “Erected to the Glory of God and the Salvation of Souls.” These words encapsulate the church’s mission.
Imagine the hymns echoing through these walls for over eight decades. Picture prayers rising in many languages. Swedish and English were the first. Then came Chinese Spanish French Swahili and Lingala. The founders likely never envisioned such diversity.

Del Rey Church has a deep connection with the Evangelical Free Church. Del Rey Church started as a church plant. In 1958, a group from the Los Angeles Evangelical Free Church met. They felt called to start a new church in Playa del Rey. They wanted to share God’s love. They purchased land and held their first service in 1959.
Harvest Los Angeles also shares a history with the Evangelical Free Church. It was established in 1970 as the Evangelical Formosan Church. It began with Chinese and Taiwanese members. These members sought spiritual growth for the second generation.
The Evangelical Free Church continues to evolve. It embraces its role in Los Angeles. It welcomes a bilingual multi-ethnic community. The community seeks transformation through Jesus. They commit to living in His power. Their service aims to bring hope justice restoration and transformation.
