Has anyone lost a passport? I’ve seen it all here at the JB Sentral – Customs & Immigration Complex. This bustling hub isn’t just a gateway between Malaysia and Singapore. It’s a stage for daily dramas, a melting pot of cultures, and a living testament to the evolving relationship between two nations. The JB Sentral – Customs & Immigration Complex, also known as Sultan Iskandar Building, stands as the largest CIQ complex in Malaysia. It replaced the old Johor Bahru Checkpoint in 2008. This modern marvel sprawls across an impressive 232,237 square meters. It’s a far cry from the simple two-story building that once managed the border crossing. The original checkpoint, built on the Johor end of the Causeway, underwent expansions in the 1980s to handle the growing traffic. But even those improvements couldn’t keep up with the ever-increasing flow of people and goods. The JB Sentral – Customs & Immigration Complex, part of the ambitious Southern Integrated Gateway project, was the answer. The complex boasts a staggering number of clearance counters. There are 38 for cars entering Malaysia, 39 for cars leaving, and a whopping 50 in each direction for motorcycles. The customs checkpoint isn’t any less impressive, with 36 counters for cars and 25 for motorcycles. And did you know that JB Sentral was among the first to go fully electronic with tolls? As of 2008, cash is a thing of the past. Only Touch ‘n Go, SmartTAG, or MyRFID are accepted. The transition to the JB Sentral – Customs & Immigration Complex wasn’t without its hiccups. In the early days, motorists complained of confusing layouts and a lack of clear signage. Pedestrians faced a longer trek to the new complex. And who could forget the 2023 blackout? An 11-hour power outage plunged the complex into darkness, forcing manual immigration processing and causing massive traffic jams. Even the Johor Menteri Besar called it an embarrassment. But through it all, the JB Sentral – Customs & Immigration Complex has persevered, a symbol of connection and transition in a constantly changing world.
