Completed in 1961, Brookdale Hall stands before us. It is a nineteen-story dormitory. Brookdale Hall is located in New York City.
Let’s explore the history and unique features of Brookdale Hall. Hyman Isaac Feldman designed it as an apartment building. Later, it was converted to a university residence hall. Yeshiva University owns it now. It operates for its Stern College for Women.
Notice the building’s early-modern style. Brookdale Hall rises 146 feet. The exterior showcases glazed white brick. Look at the five bays that add to its structure.
The ground floor is black polished granite. The entrance is in the second bay from the east. A blue canvas canopy extends onto the sidewalk. To the left, a band of five window panes catches your eye. To the right, three bays feature three windows each. Metal frames hold these windows. A service door is at the far west end.
Above the ground floor, long bands of windows mark each story. Black brick defines the piers between the bays. The center bays have double windows. The bays on either side feature triple windows. The end bays have five windows. All window bands are set in grey metal frames. Small, narrow, horizontal vents sit below each bay.
Above the 17th floor, the end bays set back. The ends of the center bays angle back, adding a unique touch. The east elevation features brown brick. Two bays of single windows are at the center.
Brookdale Residence Hall offers more than just a place to sleep. It includes apartments for four or five people. Each apartment has a kitchenette with counter space. It also has a sink and cabinet space. Some rooms even have full kitchens.
A communal Beit Midrash offers a space for study and reflection. A central package center helps manage deliveries. Two large communal lounges are on the lobby floor. The exercise room and laundry room are in the basement. Brookdale Hall provides 24/7 security at the front desk. Resident Advisors live in the building, ready to assist students.
