Did you know that Manual High School is one of Denver’s oldest high schools? Manual High School opened in 1892. But its story starts even earlier. Denver educators were impressed by manual training exhibits from Russia in 1876. The school board then recommended manual training in 1885. Construction of Manual High School finally began in 1892.
Manual High School has a rich history. It was one of the first Denver schools to educate African Americans. The school once stood as a model of excellence. But Manual High School later faced hard times. Busing for integration ended in 1995. Test scores dropped. Gang violence troubled the school. Only 20% of freshmen graduated. Denver Public Schools closed Manual High School in 2006. Students protested the closure. They couldn’t finish the school year.
Manual High School reopened in 2007. It started with only a freshman class. A new class was added each year. By 2011, Manual High School once again served grades 9 through 12. Manual’s first graduating class after reopening was in 2011. The school renewed its commitment to prepare students for college.
Manual High School has faced challenges. Problems were apparent by 2014. Despite these challenges, Manual High School maintains a strong sense of community. The school’s mascot is the Thunderbolts. The school colors are Columbia blue and red.
Manual High School has produced many notable alumni. Wellington Webb was Denver’s first African American mayor. Norman Rice became Seattle’s first black mayor. Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales was a boxer, poet, and activist. Michael Hancock is the current Denver mayor. Ted Conover is an author and journalist. Scott Horsley is a National Public Radio correspondent.
Manual High School offers many academic opportunities. Concurrent college coursework is available to some students. A magazine called BOOM! was created at Manual High School. It started in 2008. The magazine was distributed in the school and community.
Manual High School’s legacy includes a strong athletic tradition. The “Thunderbolt Fight Song” became the school song in 1942. The boys’ basketball team won its first state championship in 1939. They won their 12th state tournament in 2019.
Manual High School continues to build on its legacy. It strives to ensure students are prepared for success. In 2023, honorary diplomas were given to former students. These students were displaced by the 2006 closure. Manual High School stands as a testament to resilience. It represents a commitment to the community it serves.
