Gazing upon this tranquil woodland, can you believe the Nine Wells has quenched Cambridge’s thirst for centuries? Nine Wells, tucked away on the outskirts of Trumpington, is more than just a nature reserve. It’s a time capsule, whispering tales of ingenuity and survival. These springs, nestled at the foot of White Hill, are the lifeblood of Hobson’s Conduit. This remarkable watercourse, built between 1610 and 1614, carried fresh water into the heart of Cambridge. Imagine Cambridge in the 17th century. The King’s Ditch, meant for defense, had become a stagnant, disease-ridden moat. Andrew Perne, Master of Peterhouse, envisioned a solution. He saw the pure water gushing from the Nine Wells and devised a plan to cleanse the city. The Nine Wells became the source of Cambridge’s salvation. Hobson’s Conduit, named after the famous carrier Thomas Hobson, channeled the spring water into the city, flushing the fetid King’s Ditch and providing clean drinking water for over 250 years. The water from Nine Wells, a constant 10.2°C, still flows through the city today, even gracing the lake in the Botanic Garden. Look around. The dominant beech trees, once planted for firewood, now contribute to the ecosystem, though their leaves require careful management to maintain the water’s delicate balance. The hedgerow enclosing the reserve, planted after the 1834 Great Shelford Inclosure Act, whispers stories of a changing landscape. The monument within the reserve stands as a testament to the visionaries who brought this life-giving water to Cambridge. Thomas Chaplin, Stephen Perse, Thomas Hobson, Edward Potto, and Joseph Merrill, their names etched in stone, forever linked to the Nine Wells legacy. The Nine Wells, a vital resource for centuries, faced a crisis in 1976. A severe drought, coupled with over-abstraction of water, led to the extinction of some rare aquatic invertebrates and the loss of its SSSI status. Today, efforts are underway to restore the delicate ecosystem and ensure the springs continue to flow for generations to come. As you leave Nine Wells, remember the story of this unassuming nature reserve. It is a story of clean water, public health, and the enduring power of human ingenuity. It is the story of Nine Wells, the source that quenched a city’s thirst and shaped its destiny.
