Have you ever imagined a place where celery reigned supreme? Welcome to Del Rey a hidden gem nestled in the Westside of Los Angeles. Del Rey wasn’t always the residential haven it is today. In its early days Del Rey was a vibrant agricultural community. Market gardens flourished particularly famous for their summer celery. Imagine fields stretching as far as the eye could see. The rich soil of Ballona Creek fueled this bounty. The rhythmic sounds of cultivation punctuated the air. This lasted well into the 1950s.

The area’s transformation began with the arrival of the Redondo Beach via Playa Del Rey streetcar line in 1902. This connected Culver City to the burgeoning beach resort of Playa Del Rey. This spurred development. Del Rey evolved from a farming community into a thriving neighborhood. But nature’s forces had a role to play. Frequent flooding initially threatened the agricultural endeavors. The great flood of New Year’s Day 1934 is still remembered. That day it became impossible to grow certain crops. It changed the landscape forever.

The old streetcar and freight line eventually found new life. In the 1990s it was redeveloped into the Culver Boulevard Median Bike Path. Now cyclists enjoy the area’s scenic beauty. Del Rey’s development wasn’t without its challenges. The neighborhood’s ethnic diversity was noted in the 1930s by the Federal Housing Administration’s Redlining plans. This gave the area a low rating because of the lack of racial segregation. Sadly many Japanese-American residents were forced to leave during World War II. A monument in nearby Venice remembers their forced removal.

Today Del Rey boasts a rich tapestry of cultures. It’s one of the most ethnically diverse neighborhoods on the Westside. Mexicans and Filipinos make up a significant portion of its foreign-born residents. The neighborhood has a blend of architectural styles. Post-war bungalows are common alongside apartment buildings and a smaller industrial area. Del Rey remains a unique place a testament to its agricultural past and its vibrant present. It’s a neighborhood rich in history and culture. A place that has transformed over time adapting and evolving yet retaining a sense of its agricultural roots. Del Rey stands as a proud testament to the resilience and growth of a unique community.
