What if these walls could talk? They would tell tales of laughter, drama, and community spirit echoing through the Pierson Playhouse, Theatre Palisades. This is more than just a building. It is a cornerstone of the arts in Pacific Palisades.

Theatre Palisades began in 1963. Three television writers, Ken Rosen, Sheldon Stark, and Jacquie Chester wanted a place for original plays. They started at the Pacific Palisades Jewish Community Center. It is now Kehillat Israel on Sunset Blvd.

By 1967, Theatre Palisades became a true community theater. It thrived on membership and subscriptions. From 1967 to 1975, shows popped up everywhere. Think Palisades Park and Rustic Canyon Park plus touring shows around Southern California.

A pivotal moment arrived in 1975. Kate Ahrens from the Pacific Palisades Historical Society had an offer. Lelah and J. Townley Pierson would donate land for a theater. The Piersons’ generosity shaped the future. The board chose John G. Wallis as architect. Cynthia Wright chaired the Building Committee. Eva Holberg led fundraising with help from Bob McMillan. John Whitcombe oversaw construction. Don Johnson was the contractor.

November 1988 was a landmark. Theatre Palisades opened its new home, Pierson Playhouse. It was timed for the 25th anniversary. The 125-seat theater honored Lelah and J. Townley Pierson. They donated the land and gave generously to the building fund.

Imagine the excitement of opening night. The culmination of years of dreams and hard work. A space dedicated to live performance. It quickly became a cultural hub.

Theatre Palisades maintained a busy schedule. Five major productions ran with 18 performances each. TPYouth staged two shows yearly. These were performed by children. The theater also hosted chamber music concerts and special events. The Palisades Historical Society often held presentations here.

One person recounted their first audition at Theatre Palisades. It was for the 2010 season’s “Chapter Two”. Entering the auditorium, they were stunned. The set for “Things We Do for Love” looked Broadway-worthy. That set showed the theater’s high standards of excellence.

Sadly, Theatre Palisades has faced challenges. Though the physical space is now lost, the dedication remains. The organization is committed to rebuilding. They aim to bring live theater back to the Palisades.

Think about the countless stories shared within these walls. The Pierson Playhouse, Theatre Palisades, represents resilience. It embodies the spirit of a community that cherishes the arts. It will rise again.
