“Matsugasaki Betsugu.” The name might not ring a bell now. Yet, we stand at a site with a fascinating past. This is the \u5341\u65e5\u5e02\u516b\u5e61\u5bae\u8de1 in Kyoto.
Let’s journey back in time to the late Heian period to the early Kamakura period. It’s said this is when the Kyoto Ishi-Shimizu Hachiman-gu Shrine established a detached palace here.
In 1185, historical records mention “Matsugasaki Betsugu”. This reference appears in Minamoto no Yoritomo’s documents. The \u5341\u65e5\u5e02\u516b\u5e61\u5bae\u8de1 was once a Shinto-Buddhist complex. It embraced five associated temples. It thrived during the medieval and early modern periods. It enjoyed exemptions and patronage.
But the story of the \u5341\u65e5\u5e02\u516b\u5e61\u5bae\u8de1 takes a turn. Disputes arose with the head shrine clan over the “Tasu Shrine”. This shrine’s location in the Anki district was unclear for a long time. In 1874, the \u5341\u65e5\u5e02\u516b\u5e61\u5bae\u8de1 was abolished along with the head shrine. It was then merged into the Tasu Shrine.
Today, only traces remain of the \u5341\u65e5\u5e02\u516b\u5e61\u5bae\u8de1. Near the entrance to the road leading to Fuchu High School, you can see remnants. Stone steps and a tamagaki, a sacred fence, are still visible. A stone called “Onkoshikake Rock” also marks the spot. Legend says Emperor Jinmu rested here during his eastern expedition.
Consider this. In 1699, the “Aki-no-kuni Miyajima Dochu-ki” described this area. This description helps us imagine its past appearance. The \u5341\u65e5\u5e02\u516b\u5e61\u5bae\u8de1 has faded into the landscape. Yet, it whispers tales of ancient shrines. It speaks of powerful clans. It even echoes with imperial footsteps.
