Whispers of faith echo through the decades here at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. See how its light brick exterior stands proud against the backdrop of the Salt Lake Valley. Our Lady of Lourdes has graced this corner of 700 South and 1100 East since 1913. It has witnessed a century of Salt Lake City’s history unfold. The church has been a constant presence, a beacon of faith for generations. Our Lady of Lourdes began its life next door to the Judge Memorial Miners’ Home and Hospital. This institution, a gift from the widow of miner John Judge, opened in 1910. It provided care for miners in need. The hospital closed in 1915 but served a vital role during the 1918 influenza pandemic. The Red Cross used the building to care for patients throughout the valley. In 1922, the hospital was reborn as Judge Memorial Catholic School. Our Lady of Lourdes Church stood witness to this transformation. Over the years, the church has supported Catholic education. Eventually, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Elementary School was built alongside the church. Judge Memorial transitioned into a high school. Today, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church continues its mission. The church holds daily Mass and five weekend Masses. These include services in English, Korean, and Filipino/Spanish. The church’s history even includes a touch of Hollywood. It has served as a filming location for movies, including Stephen King’s “The Stand”. Even during wartime, the parish’s dedication remained strong. They invested building funds in war bonds, demonstrating their commitment to both faith and country. The church underwent a remodel in 1951, reflecting this enduring spirit. Inside, the church holds a unique charm. A painting of the Holy Spirit graces the ceiling. The altar is adorned with white linens and floral bouquets. The tabernacle resides in a special nook to the right of the altar, a candle perpetually lit. A banner in the balcony commemorates the church’s centennial celebration in 2013, a testament to its enduring presence.
