“Four Men on a Buoy” they call him. He stands there. A seemingly stoic figure. He is one of four.

The Bojenmann. A Hamburg landmark. He’s more than just a sculpture. He represents a unique bond between art and the city. Created by Stephan Balkenhol. He’s been a fixture on Hamburg’s waterways since 1993.

Originally carved from oak. The Bojenmann braved wind rain and even seagulls. But time and the elements took their toll. The oak couldn’t hold up any longer. So the artist did something remarkable. He recreated the Bojenmann. This time in aluminum.

This isn’t just a simple replacement. It’s a testament to Hamburg’s love for these figures. The senator for culture and media called it a love affair. Balkenhol himself waived his fee for the new sculptures. The cost of recreating the four men in aluminum? A mere 100000 euros. A small price for preserving a beloved piece of Hamburg’s character.

The Bojenmann’s design is simple yet captivating. Each figure is dressed in black pants and a white shirt. Their faces are serene. Their arms hang down in slightly different positions. They evoke a sense of quiet contemplation. This simplicity allows each viewer to project their own thoughts and emotions onto the figure. They are anonymous men. Their stories remain untold. They’re ordinary yet extraordinary.

From spring to autumn the Bojenmann graces Hamburg’s waters. In winter they are carefully removed. This is to protect them from the harshness of winter ice. Each Bojenmann holds his post. One on the Außenalster near the Gurlitt Island. Another on the Elbe. One on the Süderelbe near Harburg. And one more on a small waterway in Bergedorf.

Look closely at the Bojenmann. Notice the detail. Despite being made of a different material. The new aluminum sculptures are almost indistinguishable from their predecessors.

The Bojenmann is a symbol of Hamburg. A charming monument. It’s a testament to the power of public art. To its ability to connect with the people. To become an integral part of a city’s identity. It’s a timeless piece. A simple yet poignant reminder that even in the face of change some things endure. The Bojenmann continues to watch over Hamburg’s waters. A stoic guardian. A silent observer. A beloved friend.
