Listen closely. High above Black’s Beach, perched on La Jolla’s cliffs, lies a place where dreams take flight: Torrey Pines Gliderport.

Since the 1920s, Torrey Pines Gliderport has been a haven for aviation innovation. Officially established in 1930, it quickly became known as the “Kitty Hawk of the West”. Charles Lindbergh even soared here in a Bowlus sailplane. His wife, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, earned her first-class glider license here, too.

Imagine the roar of updrafts from the bluffs. Feel the excitement as pilots launch into the vast Pacific sky. The Torrey Pines Gliderport is more than just a historic site. It is an active aviation center. Here, enthusiasts participate in paragliding and hang gliding.

In 1936, Woody Brown achieved a groundbreaking feat. He launched a glider from the cliff top. Then he landed back on top. This opened Torrey Pines Gliderport for all.

Torrey Pines has seen incredible advancements in aviation. The Robinson variometer was developed here in 1939. It measures the rate of climb. The site also served as a testing ground for radio-controlled model airplanes in the 1960s. Hang gliders were tested here in the 1970s. The Dead-man pulley take-off system was pioneered here. So were aircraft parachute recovery systems. They first implemented wing spoilers here for controlled landings.

During World War II, the gliderport transformed into U.S. Army Camp Callan. It was an anti-aircraft artillery training facility. After the war, it reverted to a recreational glider operation.

Today, you can take tandem flights with certified pilots. These flights cost about $200 for 20 minutes. They offer stunning views of the coastline and Torrey Pines Golf Course. Weather permitting, flights are available daily.

Beyond flights, the Torrey Pines Gliderport offers the Total Raptor eXperience. Here, you can interact with hawks and falcons. Watch these free-flying birds show off their high-speed skills. Knowledgeable instructors guide these encounters.

Adding to the allure, the Cliff Hanger Cafe has a full liquor license. Enjoy cocktails and wood-fired pizzas. Relax on the expansive patio. Watch pilots take off from the cliffs. It is a perfect blend of relaxation and entertainment. Sometimes there is even weekend live music and movie nights.

Recognized as a National Landmark of Soaring and a San Diego City Historical Site, Torrey Pines Gliderport preserves its natural state. It also embraces modern amenities. This site is threatened by development. Buildings are being built east of the gliderport runway.
