Was this land cursed? That’s what some might have wondered about the grounds of Mount Tabor Baptist Church. We’re standing in front of a church that has a history as solid as the very rocks beneath our feet. Mount Tabor Baptist Church wasn’t always the sturdy structure you see today. Its journey began in the late 19th century but tragedy struck in 1932. A fierce tornado, ripping through Bartow County, tore the original church building from its foundations, leaving behind only memories and a lingering question: would faith be rebuilt from the rubble? It took nine long years, a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, for that question to be answered. In 1940, the community, yearning for a spiritual home, began holding “cottage prayer meetings”. Picture them, gathering in homes, their shared faith warming the spaces between them. This act of faith led to a land donation. A new church rose in 1941, a beacon of hope for the community. This building served the congregation until the late 1950s when the current church was built, a testament to their enduring faith. A fellowship hall and Sunday school classrooms were added later, making Mount Tabor Baptist Church more than just a place of worship. The cemetery, a silent testament to lives lived and faith shared, rests on the same grounds, a reminder that life and faith are forever intertwined.
