“Where the Han River kisses the sea,” a seasoned fisherman once told me, “lies the heart of Da Nang’s fortune.” He was talking about the DaNang Port Authority. DaNang Port Authority isn’t just a collection of piers and warehouses. It’s a living testament to Da Nang’s resilience, a place where history and progress collide. DaNang Port Authority, officially established in 1901, has witnessed the city’s transformation from a small trading post to a bustling metropolis. The port is the third largest in Vietnam, following Saigon Port and Hai Phong. Vietnam National Shipping Lines (Vinalines) oversees its operations. This isn’t just a modern marvel. It’s a place steeped in history. Long before the arrival of European traders, Da Nang was a vital port. In 1535, Portuguese explorer Antonio De Faria anchored here, marking one of the first documented Western encounters with the region. By the 19th century, DaNang Port Authority had eclipsed Hoi An as the region’s primary trading hub, thanks to Emperor Minh Mạng’s decree restricting European trade to Da Nang. The port’s strategic location at the mouth of the Han River, on the East Vietnam Sea, has made it a gateway to prosperity. It stands at one end of the East-West Economic Corridor. This corridor links Vietnam with Laos, Thailand, and Burma. The port’s significance is further underscored by its friendship with Kawasaki Port in Japan, a bond forged in 1994. Today, DaNang Port Authority boasts two main terminals: Tien Sa Seaport and Song Han Terminal. Tien Sa, with its deep-water berths, welcomes massive cargo ships and even cruise liners. Song Han handles smaller vessels, ensuring a constant flow of goods and people. The port is more than just a place of commerce. It is a symbol of Da Nang’s connection to the world, a testament to its enduring spirit.
