“Tonight we sleep in Trieste or in Paradise with the heroes.” Imagine those words etched in stone. Here, before us, stands the Monumento ai Caduti di Comazzo. This monument commemorates the fallen of World War I. It is a powerful tribute to their sacrifice.

The Monumento ai Caduti di Comazzo wasn’t built without a struggle. The initial projects were dismissed as unsuitable. Then, Filippo Tommaso Marinetti visited an Antonio Sant’Elia exhibition. Marinetti suggested using Sant’Elia’s design for the memorial tower.

Enrico Prampolini and Attilio Terragni were first involved in transforming the design into reality. Later, Giuseppe Terragni joined the project. He finalized the architectural decisions, material choices, and interior design.

Giuseppe Terragni took inspiration from Sant’Elia’s designs to construct this futuristic monument. The Monumento ai Caduti di Comazzo was completed in 1933. It was inaugurated on November 4th of the same year. The monument is dedicated to all the fallen. It especially honors Sant’Elia whose drawings inspired Terragni.

The monument is an imposing tower. It stands 30 meters high. Large windows punctuate its form. Aurisina and Reppen stone completely cover it. Inside, a granite monolith weighs 40 tons. It is covered in Anzola diorite. The names of 650 fallen from Como during World War I are engraved on it. Descend the circular staircase to find an altar. This lower level once held a shrine.

The side facing the lake bears an inscription. It says “Tonight we sleep in Trieste or in Paradise with the heroes.” Antonio Sant’Elia wrote these words on October 10, 1916. On the back, another inscription reads “The city exalts with the stones of the Karst the glory of its sons.”

Its large size makes the Monumento ai Caduti di Comazzo visible from afar. It has become a major tourist attraction in the city. The Monumento ai Caduti di Comazzo stands near the Tempio Voltiano and Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia. It is a landmark that reminds us of the past.

The monument’s design reflects a blend of influences. Sant’Elia’s futuristic vision is clear. Terragni’s architectural choices added refinement. The result is a structure that evokes contemplation. It encourages reflection on sacrifice and remembrance.

The story of the Monumento ai Caduti di Comazzo involves artistic collaboration. It shows a community’s desire to honor its heroes. It reminds us of the human cost of war. The monument serves as a testament to those who gave their lives.
