A whisper of incense hangs heavy in the air. Welcome to Longshan Temple in Shenzhen. Or perhaps it’s not in Shenzhen. The information I have is about a Longshan Temple in Jinjiang. This temple boasts a history stretching back to the Tang dynasty. It was initially known as Puxian Temple or Tianzhu Temple. It was more commonly called Guanyin Hall. Legend says a giant camphor tree once stood here. A monk named Yilisha saw its sacredness. He ordered craftsmen to carve a Thousand-Armed and Eyed Guanyin statue. This statue is the temple’s oldest treasure.
Longshan Temple has been transformed countless times. Dozens of structures were added after the Ming dynasty. This temple is significant. It is the ancestral temple for 400 similar temples in Taiwan. Imagine the journey those stories have taken! The temple has weathered storms and reconstructions. It was restored in 1623 during the Ming dynasty. Shi Lang helped repair and expand it in 1684 during the Qing dynasty. Further expansion happened in 1708. It’s a testament to enduring faith and resilience.
The Yuantong Hall is the main hall. It’s been around since the Sui dynasty. The front was repaired in the late Qing dynasty. This impressive structure houses the magnificent Thousand-Armed Thousand-Eyed Guanyin statue. This statue is four meters high. It has 1008 arms each holding Buddhist instruments or forming mudras. There are smaller Buddha statues on its head. Can you imagine the devotion that went into its creation?
The Mahavira Hall features a gilded copper statue of Sakyamuni. The Hall of Four Heavenly Kings houses the statues of the four cardinal directions. A bell tower houses a hollow wooden drum from the Sui dynasty. Each building in this complex tells its own history of devotion and rebirth. Longshan Temple has even been featured in a documentary. It continues to be a place of worship and wonder.
The temple has been recognized for its cultural and historical importance. In 1983 it was designated a National Key Buddhist Temple. In 2013 it was listed among Major National Historical and Cultural Sites in Fujian. Longshan Temple is more than just a building. It’s a living history.
