Phường Hòa Hiệp Nam is located in Liên Chiểu district. It is a coastal area in South Central Vietnam. The ward covers 7.49 square kilometers. In 2005 the population was 13555 people. That equals a density of 1810 people per square kilometer.
Let me tell you about a local treasure in Phường Hòa Hiệp Nam. About 10 kilometers from Đà Nẵngs center lies Nam Ô fishing village. It is an ancient village with over 700 years of history. It sits at the foot of the Hải Vân Pass near the Cu Đê River.
Imagine waking up before dawn near Tết. You are joining Mrs. Huỳnh Thị Thà. She is preparing to harvest sea moss. Fishermen call it mứt biển. Flashlights cut through the darkness. People carefully cross the rocky terrain. They head towards the sea.
As the tide recedes the sea moss appears. Locals believe the moss in Nam Ô is the best. It was once used to serve the King. The season lasts from October to December. This provides crucial income during the pre Tết season.
Most of the moss harvesters in Nam Ô are women. They are often between 60 and 70 years old. They carry simple tools. These include nets bags flashlights and metal scrapers.
Suddenly a large wave crashes. It slams against the rocks. Mrs. Thà clings to the cliff. She narrowly avoids being swept away. After the wave subsides she continues harvesting.
Local wisdom is essential for this job. Harvesters must be steady and quick. They must also watch out for oncoming waves. Carelessness can lead to serious accidents. Mrs. Thà says one mistake can be fatal. Fresh sea moss sells for a good price. A harvester can earn about 500000 đồng per day.
Despite the dangers harvesting sea moss is rewarding. It helps families celebrate Tết. Nam Ô is also famous for its traditional fish sauce. This sauce was also once reserved for royalty. Today about 92 households produce it. Each family uses unique methods.
The village’s fish sauce is recognized as a national cultural heritage. Mr. Trần Ngọc Vinh explains what makes it special. The traditional flavor comes from a completely manual production process. The sauce ages for 12 to 18 months.
They use fresh anchovies. These are mixed with salt from Sa Huỳnh. The mixture is then stored in vats. For the first week the vats are exposed to the sun. This releases gases. The vats are then sealed for three months. The sauce is stirred monthly until it turns amber. After 12 months they filter the sauce. The sediment is discarded. After a few days the sauce is ready.
Mr. Vinh notes that Nam Ô fish sauce uses only fish and salt. No other additives are used. The village produces about 300000 liters of fish sauce annually. They aim to produce one million liters by 2025.
Nam Ô also treasures its ancient wells. These wells are made of fitted blue stones. They never run dry even in hot weather. Another important site is the Lăng Ông Ngư temple. It houses the remains of dozens of whales. Villagers respectfully bury whales that wash ashore.
The village holds a fishing festival at Lăng Ông every year. This event honors the whales. It also seeks blessings for the upcoming fishing season.
In 2020 the Nam Ô historical site was recognized. It includes several important locations. There is the Nam Ô communal house and the Lăng Ông temple.
Another treasure is the gành đá Nam Ô rocky outcrop. It is considered a sacred forest. Local legends forbid cutting trees or taking stones. This tradition has preserved the forest. It acts as a natural barrier against storms.
Today gành đá Nam Ô is a popular spot. People come here to relax. Food stalls have sprung up nearby. However none are built within the forest.
Nam Ôs spirit lies in its history sea moss and fish sauce. Its people remain committed to their traditions. They protect their cultural values for future generations. As the elders say the village treasures its heritage.
