“Have you ever pondered the origins of serenity? Here at 泉福院, it whispers from the very stones. This temple’s history stretches back centuries. Its story is intertwined with emperors and devoted monks.

泉福院’s beginnings are traced back to Kobo Daishi. He was also known as Kukai. Kukai was a revered monk. He founded the Shingon sect of Buddhism. Legend says he established this temple. It was envisioned as a serene place of worship. It was one of the three thousand temples of Mt. Hiei. It became a leading spiritual center near Lake Biwa.

Centuries later Emperor Gokogon visited 泉福院. Emperor Gokogon reigned during the tumultuous period of the Northern and Southern Courts. The emperor was deeply moved. He saw memorial tablets dedicated to past emperors. Moved by their enshrined spirits he bestowed the title “Bodaishoin” upon 泉福院. This marked a significant moment in the temple’s history.

泉福院 faced decline but was revived by Meido Sozu. He re-established the temple in 1352. Meido Sozu was a devoted follower of Kakunyo Shonin. After Meido Sozu, other monks continued his work. They were named Meicho, Meitsu, Meiyo and Meiku. During Meiku’s time, 泉福院 transitioned to the Jodo Shinshu sect. Meiku is considered the first head of the revived temple.

During the late medieval period 泉福院 flourished. It established branch temples and expanded its influence. Four notable branch temples were built. These were in Ozu, Ogawa, Agimaki, and Imaizumida.

During the war, Rennyo Shonin sought refuge in Ozu. He built a new temple there. This was thanks to the efforts of Meiku of 泉福院.

In 1711 disaster struck. A fire destroyed 泉福院’s main hall. The temple’s historical records were lost in the blaze. The temple was later rebuilt. After 290 years the main hall showed its age. In October 2006, a new main hall was inaugurated.

Today, 泉福院 stands as a testament to resilience. It is a place where tradition meets the present. It offers solace to those seeking connection and peace. The temple welcomes everyone. It provides support for the living and the deceased. It conducts funeral services. It also conducts memorial services.

Take a moment to appreciate 泉福院. Feel the weight of history and the promise of renewal. It is a bridge between the past and the present. It is a place to connect and find peace.”
