During Operation Dewey Canyon his company came under heavy fire. Four men were wounded and attempts to rescue them failed. Noonan moved from safety. He braved the treacherous slope to reach the injured Marines.
He shouted encouragement to his fellow Marines. He then began dragging the most seriously wounded man to safety. He was wounded himself but continued. He was mortally wounded before he could reach safety.
His selfless actions inspired his fellow Marines to launch a spirited assault. The enemy was forced to withdraw.
For his extraordinary heroism Lance Corporal Noonan was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. He also received the Purple Heart National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal.
