The toxic legacy of Shawfield lingers. This land bears the scars of J & J White Chemicals. For over a century Phoenix Chemical Works operated here. It was once the largest of its kind in the world.

Phoenix Chemical Works wasn’t just a factory. It was a microcosm of Glasgow’s industrial past. It thrived on the manufacture of bichromate of potash. The Whites family built their fortunes here. Their homes became part of the sprawling complex. Success brought a new mansion far from the grime: Overtoun House near Dumbarton.

Yet prosperity came at a cost. Keir Hardie exposed the harsh realities. Workers endured 12-hour shifts. They faced dangerous chemical dust. This caused serious health problems. The workers became known as “White’s Dead Men”. Their faces were bleached. Their clothes covered in yellow chrome dust.

Lord Overtoun the owner faced criticism. He was accused of hypocrisy. His Sunday church attendance didn’t stop the factory’s seven-day operation. Improvements came. Baths and recreational facilities were added. But the legacy remained.

The works closed in the 1960s. But the contamination lingered. Hexavalent chromium a carcinogenic by-product polluted the land. Even today cleanup efforts continue. The Polmadie Burn still shows signs of this pollution. The water turns green or yellow. Shawfield’s past continues to shape its present. A reminder of the price of industrial progress. This is the enduring story of Phoenix Chemical Works.
