Established in 1953 the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts GAFA boasts a rich history. It began as the Central South College of Fine Arts in Wuhan. Its founding represented a significant merger of art schools. The first president Hu Yichuan was a renowned revolutionary artist. He participated in the Yan’an Literature and Art Symposium in 1942. The school’s early vice presidents were equally accomplished. They included the oil painter Yang Qiuren and the Chinese painting masters Guan Shanyue and Yang Taiyang.
