The impact of the Nazi regime is stark. The town’s approximately 5000 inhabitants saw the forced displacement of their 170 Jewish residents.
This sad chapter of Schöneiche’s history should not be forgotten. The local authorities were involved in this persecution. The Rathaus was the center of that administration. Sadly many benefited from the displacement. The story of the Jewish community here is tragic. Most of them were deported to ghettos and concentration camps. Few survived. After the fall of the Soviet Union new Jewish residents arrived. They formed a community in the former fire station.
The Rathaus Schöneiche was not only a place of administrative power. It hosted other significant events. One of the many notable figures associated with Schöneiche was Friedrich Wilhelm Schütze. This wealthy Berliner banker bought the village in 1761. He built a new castle a park and a candle factory. The products were delivered to the royal courts across Europe. Later the severely wounded Adolf von Lützow was nursed back to health in the lord of the manor’s house. A cast-iron plaque still commemorates his stay.
