In the bustling heart of Berlin, nestled between Bismarckstraße and Lauenburger Straße, lies Lauenburger Platz. This isn’t just any square. It’s a carefully crafted garden landscape, a “Schmuckplatz” designed by Fritz Zahn in 1909. Lauenburger Platz whispers tales of a rich past, connecting Berlin to a duchy far to the north. The Platz takes its name from the Duchy of Lauenburg, a region in Schleswig-Holstein with a history as winding as the paths through this park. Originally settled by the Slavic Polabians, Lauenburg fell under Welfen rule in the 12th century. The area eventually became part of the Duchy of Saxe-Lauenburg. Lauenburger Platz’s name echoes this historical connection. Over centuries, Saxe-Lauenburg changed hands, belonging to Denmark, then Prussia. Interestingly, Otto von Bismarck, whose name graces nearby streets, was granted the title Duke of Lauenburg. He never used the title, but the connection adds another layer to Lauenburger Platz’s story. Now, Lauenburger Platz is a vibrant green space. Its thousand square meters hold a pond, winding paths, and a grand entrance on Bismarckstraße. Look for the double staircase and the viewing platform, offering a perfect vantage point. Children will be delighted by the playground, reimagined in 2006 with a “1001 Nights” theme. Lauenburger Platz is a beautiful fusion of nature and history, a peaceful escape within the bustling city.
