Imagine a school bell echoing through time. It calls children to a place that has been a cornerstone of the Bergedorf community for well over a century. That place is the Katholische Schule Bergedorf.
Katholische Schule Bergedorf began its journey in 1889. It started as a school for the children of the St. Elisabeth orphanage. The Thuiner Franciscan nuns managed both the children’s home and the school. They also took on the role of teachers.
The school quickly gained an excellent reputation. Families from the surrounding area sought to enroll their children. Before World War II, a lack of space meant students attended in shifts. Some studied in the morning and others in the afternoon.
During the Nazi era and World War II, nearly all Catholic schools closed. Katholische Schule Bergedorf was an exception. It remained open but only for children from the orphanage. The school had a secular director and the nuns taught in civilian clothing.
After the war, student numbers rose. The school had to return to a shift system due to overcrowding. In 1960, the present school building was constructed in the orphanage’s apple garden. Initially, it was a Volksschule, encompassing grades 1 through 9.
The school expanded in the 1980s with a gymnasium. Four classrooms were added in the 1990s. Katholische Schule Bergedorf still shares its grounds with the St. Elisabeth children’s and youth center. Until the 2000s, it included a two-track pre-school, a three-track primary school, and an observation level.
In 2014, Katholische Schule Bergedorf celebrated its 125th anniversary. An extension added two classrooms and a redesigned foyer. Since 2018, a new yellow-green building houses two more classrooms. It also contains a music room, a cafeteria, and a movement hall. The school now has three pre-school classes and is four-track without an observation level.
Today, Katholische Schule Bergedorf serves around 450 students in 18 classes. There are three pre-school classes and a four-track primary school. Class sizes range from 25 to 28 students. The teaching staff consists of 29 teachers.
Katholische Schule Bergedorf is a private school supported by the Catholic School Association of Hamburg. The school is a full-day school since 2013-2014. It maintains close ties with 20 other Catholic schools in Hamburg. This network eases transitions between school types. This is true after both the 4th and 10th grades. Transfers between schools are also possible due to relocation.
The school emphasizes experiencing church community. School days begin with prayer in the classrooms. Religious education and close cooperation with St. Marien, Edith Stein, and St. Christophorus parishes are integral. Students and teachers organize services and masses for major religious holidays. The Advent singing in the church is a highlight. So is the St. Martin lantern parade and the Corpus Christi Mass on the schoolyard.
Christian values underpin the school’s philosophy. Respect, non-violent conflict resolution, helpfulness, honesty, and care are vital. The school emphasizes reading skills using libraries and the Antolin program.
